This Vital Vitamin Reduces Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and Pre-eclampsia in Pregnancy by 30 Percent

British researchers have concluded pregnant women should be advised to take vitamin D, saying that there is a "strong case" to support the vitamin's benefits.

The researchers wrote in the British Journal of Nutrition that vitamin D will benefit pregnant women and reduce the risk of diseases such as infantile hypocalcaemia and rickets.

NutraIngredients reports:

"[The researchers] said the UK was the only country in 31 that did not officially recommend vitamin D ... the UK was the only one of 31 countries examined which did not recommend that women of reproductive age took a vitamin D supplement."

Water Your Skin

We´ve all know how important water is for our health. In fact, every system in our body dependss on water to function. We need to be conscience of how much water we are drinking or should I say, how much we are not drinking each day. Each day we need to 6-8 glasses of water.

If we focus on the very skin cells, water is the most important factor in their formation and repair. Water naturally purifies the body by flushing out toxins and waste. We are in contact with numerous contaminants each day, and water is necessary to flush them out and repair our body´s system. Without the cleansing effects of water, the chemical substances accumulate and damage the cells. When the cells are functioning properly, the obvious result will be skin that´s clear, smooth and beautiful.

Having skin that´s healthy, radiant and naturally glows, is all possible by drinking the answer that nature has given us - WATER.

What's the difference between dry skin, eczema, and dermatitis?

Dry skin, eczema and dermatitis are all common skin conditions, and most people use these three terms interchangeably, however, they're not the same. Depending on which one you have, will determine how you should treat it.

Dry skin can usually be fixed easily with lotions or creams. Healthy skin has a thin layer of lipids that protect it from everyday tasks. They lock in moisture, leaving your skin soft and beautiful. Normally, something in the environment or something you're doing to your skin is removing the fatty oils, leaving your skin dry and unprotected. Extreme dryness can lead to either eczema or dermatitis.

Eczema is describes a group of skin conditions that cause irritation or inflammation, usually the result of allergies, asthma or hay fever. Eczema symptoms include intense itchiness, dryness and redness. Although the exact cause is unknown, there are certain factors that contribute to eczema such as food allergies and a deficiency of specific vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essentials fatty acids.

Dermatitis is a general term that describes an inflammation of the skin, accompanied by redness and itchiness. Because both conditions are very similar, dermatitis and eczema are often confused. Dermatitis occurs when the skin comes in contact with an allergen such as chemicals found in soaps, perfumes and makeup creating a skin reaction. Eczema is usually the result of allergies. Other common irritants include cleaning products, rubber, metals, weeds (like poison ivy), and neomycin (a common ingredient in topical antibiotic creams).

Treatments:
For ordinary dry skin, apply natural skin care balms daily. To sooth eczema and dermatitis, you'll need a skin care product with extreme moisturizing power that doesn't contain perfumes or other possible allergens.

Skin and Skin Care During Pregnancy

Rather than a healthy glow from being pregnant, my skin looks terrible. Any advice?

The range of ways a woman's body can change during pregnancy can be broad. Some feel really beautiful, and their skin becomes really clear—but that's not true for everybody. Many women actually develop acne or skin rashes.

Sounds as if you're among the unlucky ones. Treating your acne with regular over-the-counter medications, such as Oxy10, is probably safe during pregnancy, though we don't know for sure because there's not a lot of research on the subject.

We do know, however, that using prescription drugs like Accutane and tetracycline is dangerous during pregnancy. Be sure that if you go to a dermatologist, you tell your doctor that you are pregnant so they don't end up giving you something that would be dangerous to your baby.

The best advice is to ask your doctor. There is no evidence of harm but with little data available, you might want to be cautious and not use anything that has any active ingredients.

Beauty And Diet Tips During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is nine months long and with proper preparation many of the ordinary discomforts and beauty problems of pregnancy can be avoided, giving a feeling of well being and great satisfaction. The inevitable result of bearing a child is that the infant draws upon the mother's reserves, thus making her undernourished, sickly and pale. To avoid this eat a nourishing diet. If the daily supplies of food are sufficient, the bones, teeth, hair, eyes, skin and the mother's other reserves will not be drawn upon and the infant will be properly supported on 'income' and not on mother's 'capital'.

A pregnant woman
should daily take: at least four cups of milk; two or more fruits, one of which should be citrus; two or more vegetables, one of which should be deep green or yellow; one dish of potatoes;. one or more eggs; 250 gram or more of either meat, fish or poultry; three to four servings of either whole grain or bread; four tablespoons of butter; one multivitamin tablet; two calcium tablets and one fish liver oil capsule.

The food mentioned above will provide for the maintenance of the mother's body with enough extra to take care of the tissue growth of the infant, enough calcium and vitamin D for basic development and enough iron to prevent anemia in the mother and to supply all the needs of the infant.
Constipation is a very common problem during pregnancy and, if not checked, it gives rise to a number of embarrassing skin blemishes. To cure it drink at least eight glasses of water every day. Besides, include laxative fruits like figs, punt's and beetroot in your daily diet.

As the abdomen becomes larger, the skin stretches. Fibres of the connective tissue immediately underlying the skin separate and give rise to white stretch marks
. To avoid these, it is always wise to massage the abdomen and the breasts regularly with oil from the first month of pregnancy right to the last and even after deliveryfor a few months at least. On no account scratch the abdomen and the breasts, because this will leave scratch marks for ever afterwards on the skin. If you feel very itchy, gently very gently rub the skin with your hands.

If you are planning on breast feeding your baby, you should begin preparing your nipples from the sixth month onwards. Once everyday, draw out each nipple by gently pressing your thumb and index finger down on either side of the nipples and gently rolling the nipple out. After your nipple stands out, massage it well with little olive oil. Nursing will not cause your breasts to become flabby, if you wear well-fitting brassier. Buy yourself a few maternity dresses, which today come in many attractive designs and shapes. Do not forget that a large 'percentage' of attractiveness is accounted for by good grooming and good posture.

The clothes should be comfortable and well fitting with allowances for future expansion. Also discard high heeled shoes and wear comfortable low heeled flat shoes.

Towards the later months many women develop varicose veins. Varicose veins is a disease in which the veins become very enlarged and protrude out of the skin. Varicose veins mostly develop in the legs. The women who develop this condition are the ones whose occupation requires standing or sitting for long periods.

It is wise that during pregnancy, you do as much of your work as possible in a sitting position with your feet propped up.When you have to be on your feet, it is better to move around than to stand still. If you develop this condition, wear plastic stockings before you get up from your bed. Report your condition immediately to your doctor. Besides, you should lie down at least once every day for at least one hour in a body slant position.

Sometimes swelling of legs, ankles, feet, fingersand face too-may appear during the last months. The cause of swelling is the retention of water in the tissue spaces of the body; a high intake of salt favors the retention of water, which is why you should eliminate or use very little salt in your diet and reduce the intake of liquids.

The pressure of the body on the large blood vessels in the later months may give rise occasionally to bouts of light headedness and sometimes fainting. If this occurs, you will feel better if you lie down for a few minutes. Also increase your intake of iron.

Sometimes your sleep maybe interrupted by hard muscular cramps in the calves of your legs. Massage the cramped area vigorously and apply hot water bottle or heating pad to the area.

Heartburn and flatulence are the other common disturbances of pregnancy. Heartburn is a kind of burning feeling which is noted at the lower end of the breast bonetherefore, the name Heartburn. To prevent this eat smaller meals at regular intervals rather then the bigger ones. To prevent flatulence or the formation of gas in the body, eat light and nourishing foods rather than rich and heavy foods.

Proper care of the skin and hair is specially important during pregnancy. A daily bath with a mild fragrant soap is a must. Clean your skin both morning and night with milk cream to which a little lime juice and turmeric powder has been added. Every morning before you go in for your bath take a teaspoon of curd and mix in a few drops each of almond oil and essence of rose. Rub it well into the skin and remove with cotton wool. This will soothe and feed the skin.

For the night make this skin food to four tablespoons of cream of milk add one tablespoon each of almond oil, cucumber juice, honey, rose water and lime juice. Mix well and put in a small jar and store either in the fridge or a cool, dry place. Apply every night before going to bed. Remove in the morning with a piece of cotton wool, then splash on cold water. This will put a bloom on your cheeks and sparkle in your complexion.

Wear minimum of makeup. If you have a tendency to develop rashes it will be exaggerated during pregnancy. Sometimes pigmentation of the skin takes place or the formation of small areas in which the minute skin veins become prominent. There is no remedy for these ailments but they disappear soon after pregnancy. You should give up all our social engagements and lead a very moderate life. Your motto should be Early to Bed and Early to Rise. Good sleep, fresh air, regular skin care, exercise coupled with right diet should give you health, strength and beauty throughout the time you are 'expecting.'

Skin Care During Pregnancy

Face it- pregnancy changes everything. Including your skin. Fortunately, there is plenty that you can do for skin care during pregnancy that is safe and effective. Read on to learn about skin care during pregnancy for oily skin and breakouts, as well as skin care during pregnancy for dry skin.

Skin Care During Pregnancy: Oily Skin

During the first trimester, many women experience an increase in breakouts and this is especially true for those who were prone to acne before pregnancy. According to most physicians, the reason for this is the dramatic shift in hormones. With an increase in androgen levels, many women experience an increase in oil production and unsightly breakouts along with it.

  • Do NOT treat pregnancy-related breakouts with conventional acne medications. Many of these medications are harmful to fetal development and known to cause birth defects. Advise your dermatologist that you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, so you can develop a regime that is appropriate for skin care during pregnancy. Avoid all prescription acne medications, including vitamin A preparations such as Accutane or Retin-A. Also avoid over-the-counter creams that contain retinol or antibiotics.
  • During the first trimester, also do NOT use cleansers, makeup and moisturizers that contain chemical exfoliants. These products include salicylic acid, glycolic acid and alpha and beta hydroxyl acids. Read labels, because many popular products contain these chemicals, and they may not be appropriate for skin care during pregnancy especially not the first trimester. Consult your obstetrician to see if he or she approves of using these medications on your face after the first trimester.
  • Do use moisturizers, makeup, sunblock and cleansers that are labeled "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic". These products are designed to keep your pores clean and clear, to help avoid breakouts.
  • For oily skin care during pregnancy, DO use mechanical exfoliants to keep skin clean and physically remove pore-clogging dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Gentle scrubs with very fine particles are most appropriate, and you can make your own scrub by adding a small amount of baking soda to an appropriate cleanser.
  • DO try a cleansing facial at a salon every two weeks or so for gentle, thorough cleansing. Advise the salon of your condition, and let them know that you are avoiding vitamin A preparations and chemical exfoliants.

Pregnancy skin care problems

Melasma or mask of pregnancy: Towards the end of the second trimester or the beginning of the third trimester, you may notice a discoloration of the skin. The most common areas are the cheek, forehead, nose and the upper lip. Statistical data point out that the overproduction of melanocyte-stimulating hormone affects close to 70% of all pregnant women. Increased hormones cause skin pigmentation. Consequently pregnant women develop dark, irregular patches, which fade away soon after the baby is born. You can guard yourself from melasma by reducing exposure to sunlight and by using sunscreens.

Acne: It is common for pregnant women to develop acne during the first three months of pregnancy. Due to the fluctuation of hormones, the skin can dry out more than normal and result in acne. A quick and easy remedy to keep acne at bay is by drinking plenty of water and eating lots of fruits and vegetables. You can consult your health care provider and use skin creams that contain erythromycin and other antibiotics that will not affect the growing fetus.

Pimply eruptions: Otherwise referred to as pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPP), pimply eruptions are common during the second half of pregnancy. Signs of red, raised patches on the abdomen, thighs and buttocks (or all over the body) appear and can be very irritating to the pregnant woman. Mild or severe in nature, these eruptions vanish quickly after delivery. Calamine lotion can provide relief from the irritation.

Linea Nigra: Around the second trimester, a faint line running from the navel to the center of the pubic bone may turn darker and become a linea nigra. The nipples too may turn darker as a result of the hormonal changes during pregnancy. Hardly preventable, linea nigra fades away after few months of delivery.

Dry itchy abdomen: With the belly growing, your skin stretches and tightens. Quite difficult to eliminate, you can use suitable moisturizing cream or olive oil, which can provide substantial relief. You can also avoid hot showers and baths, eliminate using drying soaps or products that contain alcohol which will make the skin dry fast.

Skin tags: Tiny polyps called skin tags can appear in areas where the skin rubs on clothing or just with the skin. Skin tags are commonly found under the arms or breasts, between neck folds or on the chest. With hardly any treatment options, these tags may require a health care provider to remove them in case they do not disappear few months post delivery. Skin tags are understood to be a result of hormonal changes.

Spider veins: Red or purple sunbursts in the shape of a spider web may appear on the face, neck, upper chest, legs or arms. Referred to as spider veins or telangiectasia or broken capillaries, these are tiny blood vessels that form due to increased blood circulation, most common during pregnancy. The other reason being hormonal changes, these spider veins disappear soon after delivery. You can increase your Vitamin C intake and consciously avoid crossing your legs to help minimize spider veins.

Varicose veins: Pregnant women may develop enlarged veins in the legs. You can avoid or reduce the risk of varicose veins by involving in gentle exercises, avoiding crossing of legs, increasing intake of vitamin C or using suitable tights or stockings before getting out of bed in the morning. Varicose veins become normal or disappear after delivery.

Red or itchy palms: Otherwise termed as palmar erythema, the increased estrogen level in pregnant women may cause the palms to turn red and itchy. Beginning, second month of pregnancy, you may notice the inside of hands and sometimes even the soles of feet itching and turning reddish. These changes fade away post delivery.

Masks for breast skin

Spoil breast with homemade masks. Remember that you ought not to touch mammilla and area during cosmetic procedures. Though cold is more useful for breast, but offered masks are better to do in the bath or sauna. When skin is steamed, cosmetic ingredients penetrate deeper into inner skin sells.

Make mask from rose-petals, which has fine tonic effect. Grind dry rose-petals in the coffee-grinder till flour state. Take 2 table-spoons of this flour and mix with 1 table-spoon of sour cream. Put on the breast and leave for 15 minutes.

If you see small wrinkles on the breast you should make special potato mask. Knead half of one boiled potato (without salt) by fork. Add 1 tea-spoon of honey, 1 tea-spoon of sour cream and 50 ml. of vegetable oil. Put on the breast skin for 20 minutes. Such mask will smooth wrinkles and make skin soft, if you make it once a week.

Winter skin care tips

Winter is not in a hurry anywhere. Snowstorms cover ground with snowdrifts. Frost paints fantastic patterns on the windows. But cold winds and frosty air are not very good for our skin, alas. By the way, dry air of apartments and offices damages the skin condition too. Also our skin is injured by close touch with scarves, high collars and winter hats. Often oily skin becomes closer to normal, and normal skin becomes dry, dry skin becomes overly sensitive and irritated.

In winter you shouldn’t wash with soap and use lotions, containing alcohol. Otherwise you will provoke additional dryness of the skin, shrinkage and peeling. It’s better to wash with milk or cream. I advise to wash in the morning with a weak brew of green tea or with a decoction of camomile. If you want to have tanned skin, you’d better to wash with a weak brew of black tea. Also in the morning it is recommended to apply nourishing cream 20-30 minutes before going outside; and to use moisturizing cream at night.

Make special masks twice a week to look good and to live till spring. These masks are easy to do but very effective. Looking at yourself in the mirror in two weeks, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Vitaminizing and moisturizing mask. Mash 1 kiwi with a fork; add the yogurt and some potato starch. Mix everything until the consistency of sour cream. Apply on face, neck and area of décolleté for 20 minutes. Then rinse with warm decoction of parsley or green tea brew. Finally apply any moisturizing cream.

Mask for skin rejuvenation. Peel and grate 1 small but juicy carrot. Add a tablespoon of soft cottage cheese and 1-2 teaspoons of fat cream. Apply the mask on the face for 10-15 minutes and then rinse with warm water and apply cream.

Rejuvenating and nourishing mask. Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with warm cream. Apply the mixture on the face, neck and décolleté area with brush, very carefully, for 20 minutes. Then rinse with camomile decoction or warm water. Wipe the face with a piece of ice from the broth of parsley or simply the usual piece of ice. Apply moisturizing cream. This mask also helps to get rid of the shrinkage and small wrinkles.

Mask for dry skin. Pour 1 tablespoon of lime flowers (available at drug stores) with ½ cup of boiling water to brew and infuse for 2 hours. Then filter, take 1 tablespoon of infusion and add 1 tablespoon of natural butter without vegetable additives. Mix thoroughly and apply on face for 20-25 minutes. Then dry the remnants of fat with a napkin.

Potato mask. Take 1 potato, boil in its jacket, peel hot potato and make puree quickly. Then add 1-2 tablespoons of sour cream and apply the mask on face and neck. Cover with a towel. After 20-25 minutes rinse with warm water.

One more exclusive recipe. If you want a visible and rapid improvement, then you should wash with hips decoction. Pour 2 tablespoons of hips with 2 glasses of boiling water in a thermos bottle in the evening. In the morning strain ½ glasses, add 1 teaspoon of honey and moisten face and neck with a cotton swab wet in the mixture. After 20-25 minutes rinse with boiled water of room temperature.

Laser treatments for the skin and the body

Since the very dawn of time, people have wanted to reverse the effect of ageing on the skin so as to look younger. Technology has finally reached a point where the use of laser can provide a variety of treatments to the skin from smoothing out wrinkles to removing unwanted hair to tightening the skin. For instance, pixel skin resurfacing can repair skin damage by acne or scarring by removing surface layers of skin and stimulating the skin underneath to grow healthy and smooth. You can get all the benefits of chemical or abrasive smoothening without the pain and a much shorter time to heal.

Another major use of laser technology is in the removal of unwanted hair. This represents a major cosmetic issue for both men and women and long-term solutions have been missing. Lasers use just enough heat energy to damage the hair follicle in the area that is being treated so that it cannot regenerate or renew hair. The treatment is safe and painless though several sessions may be required to achieve a permanent result.

Weight loss is a major problem for many people because there are pockets of fat in the body that simply will not respond to traditional diet and exercise regimes. With the use of laser, a technique called body sculpting has evolved, which involves reshaping the body surgically. The heat from the laser is used to liquefy the fat pockets and the liquid fat is then removed with the help of a vacuum. The procedure is highly effective, especially on smaller areas where liposuction may be difficult.

In the Zerona procedure, a low-level laser that does not generate any heat is used to perform the procedure. It is not invasive, and low level lasers have no recorded side effects. The patient feels absolutely nothing and recovery time is minimal. You must keep in mind that this is not a crash weight loss program but a programme to remove fat and sculpt your body for the best possible results.

There's No Vacation From Skin Care

Everybody loves to go on vacation. Whether you happen to be into sun and sand, or slopes and snow boards, a little time away from all the boring yet stressful parts of your life can be just the rejuvenation you need, to get back to things energized and ready to build a better life. But, of course, even on vacation, you still have some responsibilities. While no one wants to think of serious chapping, let alone melanoma skin cancer, these are both potential hazards, which can be magnified by the weather conditions you may encounter while you are on vacation. So whether you happen to be going on cruises or skiing on the Alps, you may want to take heed of the following tips for on the go skin care.

Pack some dry skin lotion. While many people do not think of this, dry skin can make your entire vacation less comfortable overall. A little lotion applied liberally can make you feel a lot better… and if you happen to be on the beach and on the prowl, it can also help you to look better for the opposite sex.

Also pack the sun screen. Sun screen of at least SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 30 is extremely useful for keeping your skin from developing all sorts of cancerous growths over time. Just apply it half an hour before you plan to go out into the Sun, and the effects will become noticeable overtime. While not everyone who get a lot of sun get cancer, many people develop hard, leathery skin as they grow older – and a great deal of the reason for this is contained in their level of unprotected Sun exposure. Also keep in mind that the Sun’s radiation is only slightly lessened, even by heavy cloud cover. Just because the weather is cold, does not mean you should abandon the use of Sun screen.

Perfume - The accessory that goes with any outfit.

Get the most out of your fragrance purchase with these tips:

Don't apply fragrance directly from the bottle with your fingers. Oil from your skin will enter the bottle and adversely affect the fragrance. Use an atomizer or apply fragrance to a cotton ball and then apply to your skin.

When applying fragrance, spray fragrance from the ankles up. Remember, fragrance always rises! Also remember the golden rule of perfume – spray sparingly. You can always add more, but if you go overboard and spray too much a shower is just about the only thing that will get rid of it.
Try to keep your perfume off your clothing. Apply the perfume only on the skin where it has a chance to develop and mellow. Also, bear in mind that perfume can stain some delicate fabrics, especially silk, so it's best to apply your perfume before you dress.

Don't buy a fragrance just because it smells good on a friend. A fragrance is as individual as you are and will smell differently as it reacts with your own chemistry.

When shopping for a fragrance try not to sample more than three fragrances at a time, after that your nose can no longer distinguish the scents. Try smelling the coffee beans that are on the fragrance counter in most department stores between samplings. The beans help to "cleanse the palate" and will allow you to try more perfumes (that's what they're there for).

Protect your fragrance from heat and light to prolong its scent -- store it in the bathroom cupboard, not on the counter with your blow dryer and curling iron.

D'vine line taps efficacy of vine for an ageing skin

Ophthalmologist Dr. Richard Mauer is reported to have created a new skin care line, d’vine,
based on wine extracts and grapes. Apparently, the cosmetic industry has made its foray into
exploring the polyphenols in grape skin and seeds.
Therefore, there is nothing new in the manifestation of antioxidants from grapes in a line of
cleansers, moisturizers, mists, masks, serums, eye creams and products for men. What might
appeal consumers is the claims made in the names of the products as in Petite Sirah Cleanser,
Zinfandel Scrub, Chardonnay Gel and Riesling Serum, to be made available in medical or
destination spas, priced in between $40 to $92.
There has been evidences backed by dermatologists and editors of skin magazines that the
trend of using grapes in skin care products is consolidated in the d’vine line with research
into the biochemistry of wine and purity from the Californian grapes. Consumers might find a
promising beginning to an anti-ageing skin with the promising benefits of polyphenols for skin
from the d’vine line.

Using sunscreen is far better than anti-wrinkle creams!

If you are using anti-wrinkle creams to suppress wrinkle formation on your face then you are
merely wasting your money and it would be far better to use sunscreen lotions if you really don’t
want those wrinkles on your face. A new study by the researchers has uncovered this fact.
Interestingly, it was also found that higher price of an anti-wrinkle cream doesn’t ensure that
anti-wrinkle cream is more effective, since, researchers found that some cheaper anti-wrinkle
creams like Olay Regenerist were more effective compared with other expensive anti-wrinkle
creams.
Before annunciating these facts, researchers conducted few tests and light-skinned women
between the ages of 30 and 70 were asked to apply anti-wrinkle creams on one side of their
face and moisturizer with sunscreen on the other side of their face and amazingly, it was found
that results, which were expected form anti-wrinkle creams not came from them but from
moisturizers with sunscreen.
Personally, I believe that this is a major blow to anti-wrinkle cream industry, since for years
women all over the world are using these creams to look young, which costs thousands of
dollars every year. Moreover, this finding presages a fulgent future for sunscreen producing
industry. But the most important thing that I pull out of this study is the shattering of the myth
that was constantly prompting women to go on with anti-wrinkle creams.

Vitamin C rich diet and beauty products may slow skin wrinkling

Researchers now report that people who eat plenty of vitamin C-rich foods have fewer wrinkles
than people whose diets contained little of the vitamin.
fruit
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means that it can combat the effects of free radicals in your
body and on your skin. Free radicals are the unstable molecules in the environment that can
cause aging of the skin. So, when vitamin C is properly delivered into skin cells, there is a good
chance to reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture.
However, eating a bag of oranges every week is not going to bring about the desired results for
your skin. In order to see the benefits of vitamin C on the outside of your body, you will need
to find a way to combine a healthy diet that is rich in vitamin C with skin care products that
contain this important nutrient. Scientists have now discovered how to use a variety of vitamin C
derivatives in skin care products that will bring about the same benefits as natural vitamin C with
less of the ingredient required for results.
Apart from intake of vitamin c there are also other ways to protect skin from damage and keep it
glowing. Free radicals which damage the skin are accumulated due to excessive sun exposure,
cigarette smoke and environmental pollutants. Hence, skin has to be protected against these.
Have plenty of water, when people are dehydrated wrinkles are much more noticeable. Use
sunscreen and a good night moisturizer.

Boots moisturiser to obscure the thin line between cosmetics and medicine

It would only seem like a sensible thing to do when one proports the idea that out of all the face
creams available in the market, let’s figure out which one proves to be the most effective. Often
women get carried away by brands without even realizing the percentage of relevant chemicals
that are in the cream or whether or not will it suit them. Anti-ageing cream is one such product
that women buy in dozens simply because they help them to fight against their perpetual enemy
- Age.
BBC’s Horizon programme last year undertook such research and declared Boots’
moisturizer ‘No 7′ as No.1 in efficiency to slow down ageing. Following their lead, Chris Griffiths,
professor of dermatology at the University of Manchester, administered this study on 60
volunteers for a period of 6 months and the data is still under analysis at the moment. If its high
efficiency is proven, it will spark off a debate where dermatologists and peers will question the
threshold of efficiency, upon reaching which, a cosmetic will be declared a medicine.
Some active constituents like white lupin - a flower extract - and retinyl palmitate and a plain
moisturizing base are all set to be examined on how do they work in combination. This kind of a
declaration led to queuing up of consumers in stores for their portions of the magic potion as is
shown in the picture.
When a cream would become a medicine, it will give rise to several issues for the company. It
can no longer be retailed at stores and has to obtained only after production of a prescription
and such possibilities lead to incessant production of mild creams that can be overpriced in
the cosmetic industry without being labeled as medicine. It continues to remain an unresolved
problem for which Chris Flowers, head of the Cosmetic Toiletry and Perfumery Association
(CTPA) said,
There are consumers out there who do want the science, but equally there are those who
feel it can be a ruse to push prices up. We need to cater to both - those who want the extensive
trials and those who want a simple product that doesn’t cost the earth.
Well, till the time the results come out and the legislation works its own stuff out, looks like No 7
from Boots is the safest bet for the ones who face wrinkle-phobia!

Botox: Hey! Males require bigger share, you know!

Using Botox for men’s cosmetic procedures, certainly requires higher doses of it in all treatment
areas and the reason is higher muscle mass that males commonly enjoys in comparison with
women. Similarly, clinical observations have also revealed that larger, stronger men need more
units per treatment area than slender, small-boned men. According to study author:
Various areas of the male face can be treated with Botox and injections need to keep in mind
the greater muscle mass in men.
Normally men don’t seek Botox treatment for cosmetic procedures and it’s more popular
in females. However, in the recent years it has gained popularity among males too, which
has made this issue worth discussing. So, it would be interesting to see in future that what
alternative expects come up with for males.

Caffeine-drinking 'exercise-freaks' have reduced skin cancer risks: Study

Prolonged exposure to sunlight, besides other factors leads to skin cancer. In 2007 alone,
1,000,000 cases of skin (non-melanoma) cancer have been estimated, with nearly 2000 people
being killed by the disease.
Though it is not always possible to change one’s job requirements to go out and travel in the
sun, change in your ‘lifestyle’ can be an answer to the deadly disease.
If you are an exercise freak, just add to it a cup of that refreshing coffee - and you are at the
least risk of developing skin cancer!
Yes, by building up this healthy but simple habit, you may actually reduce your risk from the
painful and killer disease. This combination of exercise and caffeine may help bringing in a
revolutionary remedy to the growing skin cancer cases across the world.
Dr. Allan H. Conney of the laboratory for cancer research at Rutgers said,
With an understanding of these mechanisms we can then take this to the next level, going
beyond mice in the lab to human trials. With the stronger levels of UVB radiation evident today
and an upward trend in the incidence of skin cancer among Americans, there is a premium on
finding novel ways to protect our bodies from sun damage.
And if you are a ‘caffeine-drinking runner’ and the new finding proves true for humans, then you
are just the ideal example of the lifestyle that can effectively reduce skin cancer risks.
But again, that does not mean, you can take the liberty of staying unprotected under the sun for
hours!

Seven tips for a glowing skin in scorching summer heat!

glowing skin
Good clothes are important as they make us look good but something more important then that
is a good skin. Cosmetic Aesthetic Expert Dr. Cheryl Perlis has penned down seven tips that
can make your skin the next best thing to wear. I am sure you have got my point, so, check
these out.
1. Exfoliate your skin regularly so that your dry, flaky skin is no longer there. A good exfoliate
will be the one which will contain Retin A, Renova or Retinols. Apart from using home remedies
as defoliators, one should also go for professional peels once in a month.
2. Revitalize your skin with some good gels like Collagen and Elastin Gel by Clayton Shagal &
Witch Hazel, which helps in replenishing and rejuvenating your skin. It also relieves your skin
from sunburns. Other methods include a treatment with the Laser Genesis or a photo facial.
3. Make sure that you moisturize not only your face but your body to as it prevents wrinkles and
helps in keeping your skin smooth which is an extra advantage. Also remember that creams
replenish more deeply then lotions. Ponds cold cream is one of the best products.
4. De-Wrinkling your skin is another effective method that brings back life to your skin. Dermal
fillers like Restylane and Juvederm helps adding volume, where Botox does the same too.
Vaseline is one thing that can make you do away with Botox and likes.
5. Lips are an important part of our face and believe me, they can also look bad if not taken
care of properly. Use good quality lip balms every now and then. A good lip balm will consist of
Vitamin E and wax.
6. Hydration of your body is very important. Make sure you drink a lot of water, which actually
accounts for half the weight you have.
7. Vitamins are important for a healthy skin. A glowing skin can only be assured with the intake
of multivitamins.

Want to get rid of Acne? Eat foods that have low glycemic index

Acne is the word every teen hates but faces this nightmare at one point or the other during her
growing years. There are as many numbers of creams and lotions available as the number of
teens with acne! New research suggests that a diet with foods containing low glycemic loads
could help people suffering from acne to get rid of their acne.
Scientists from th RMIT university in Melbourne studied the effect of food on about forty three
patients aged between 15 and 25 years. They were randomly assigned a normal diet and a low
glycemic load diet for 12 weeks. The diet consisted of 25 percent energy from protein and 45
percent from low-glycemic-index carbohydrates.
It was found that people whose diet consisted of low-glycemic-index carbohydrates had a
significant reduction in the total acne when compared to people on a normal diet.
What is Glycemic index?
The Glycemic Index (GI) relates to the way your body’s sugar levels respond to certain foods.
Foods are given a rating from 0 -100 on the glycemic index with glucose in the highest position.
High Glycemic Index foods (such as simple carbohydrates) will increase the body’s sugar levels
rapidly whereas low glycemic index foods will increase the body’s sugar levels slowly according
to HWF.
The new findings suggest that diets that contain low glycemic loads may not only improve
insulin sensitivity and helps reduce weight but clears up acne as well.
So, if you want to get rid of acne and have a blemish free skin, foods that have high glycemic
index like white bread, sugar, potatoes are a strict NO. However you can eat low-glycemic foods
like whole grains, vegetables, fish and lean meat as these foods are kinder to your skin and say
good bye to acne forever.

Tips to apply sunscreen more effectively

Before going out in the sun, question that strikes the brain is how to prevent the skin from
the harmful UV rays of the sun. The answer is simple- by using sunscreen lotions. However,
sometimes sunscreen lotions are used quite inappropriately, which prevents from accessing its
full benefits. However, before applying any sunscreen lotion make sure that it suits your skin.
Here are some genuine tips to use sunscreen lotions:-
• Make sure that you apply sunscreen lotion at least 30 minutes before you go out, as it would
allow skin to absorb the lotion.
• Applying sunscreen lotion just once is not sufficient. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when
outdoors, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.
• Skin around the tops of the ears, nose, and cheeks is quite susceptible to sunburn, so apply
sunscreen on these areas, liberally.
• Use roughly a handful to cover your entire body.
These were some of the authentic ways of applying sunscreen lotion, however, it should not be
forgot that clothes serve as the best shield against UV rays, therefore, try to dress up in such a
manner that most of your body parts are covered. In addition, don’t forget to drink lots of water.

Laser treatments for the skin and the body

Since the very dawn of time, people have wanted to reverse the effect of ageing on the skin so
as to look younger. Technology has finally reached a point where the use of laser can provide
a variety of treatments to the skin from smoothing out wrinkles to removing unwanted hair to
tightening the skin. For instance, pixel skin resurfacing can repair skin damage by acne or
scarring by removing surface layers of skin and stimulating the skin underneath to grow healthy
and smooth. You can get all the benefits of chemical or abrasive smoothening without the pain
and a much shorter time to heal.
Another major use of laser technology is in the removal of unwanted hair. This represents a
major cosmetic issue for both men and women and long-term solutions have been missing.
Lasers use just enough heat energy to damage the hair follicle in the area that is being treated
so that it cannot regenerate or renew hair. The treatment is safe and painless though several
sessions may be required to achieve a permanent result.
Weight loss is a major problem for many people because there are pockets of fat in the body
that simply will not respond to traditional diet and exercise regimes. With the use of laser, a
technique called body sculpting has evolved, which involves reshaping the body surgically.
The heat from the laser is used to liquefy the fat pockets and the liquid fat is then removed
with the help of a vacuum. The procedure is highly effective, especially on smaller areas where
liposuction may be difficult.
In the Zerona procedure, a low-level laser that does not generate any heat is used to perform
the procedure. It is not invasive, and low level lasers have no recorded side effects. The patient
feels absolutely nothing and recovery time is minimal. You must keep in mind that this is not
a crash weight loss program but a programme to remove fat and sculpt your body for the best
possible results
